France’s Dominant Performance

France secured their place in the World Cup round of 16 with a commanding 3-0 victory over Sweden in New Jersey. The match saw Kylian Mbappe score twice, bringing his tournament total to six goals, which places him level with Lionel Messi in the race for the Golden Boot. Michael Olise also played a pivotal role, providing key assists throughout the game.

The French team’s performance was described as emphatic, with their procession through the group stages appearing ominous for rivals. Sweden struggled to contain the French attack, managing only two efforts on target in what was largely a one-sided contest. Didier Deschamps returned to the dugout for the match, and Mbappe celebrated his opening goal by embracing the coach, highlighting the team’s unity.

Mbappe opened the scoring in the first half, beating Jacob Zetterstrom with a deft finish from an Ousmane Dembele pass. He later linked with Olise to score France’s third goal with a curling far-post finish. Between Mbappe’s goals, Olise set up Bradley Barcola, who then scored France’s second goal with a powerful strike into the top corner.

The attacking quartet of Mbappe, Dembele, Olise, and Barcola demonstrated a high level of performance, with Mbappe creating the joint-most chances and completing the most dribbles, while Olise delivered the most shots and generated the most touches. This collective effort contributed to France becoming the first team to score three or more goals in five consecutive World Cup matches.

Team Unity and Individual Brilliance

The unity within the France squad was evident, particularly with Deschamps’ return. After Mbappe’s first goal, the team gathered for a group hug, showcasing their collective strength. Deschamps noted that while team spirit alone does not guarantee wins, its absence can lead to losses, emphasizing the importance of their collective strength.

Mbappe’s individual brilliance was a highlight. Olise’s contributions were also significant, as he provided multiple assists, taking his tournament tally to five. He is the first player to achieve five or more assists in a single World Cup tournament since 1994.

The partnership between Dembele and Mbappe has resulted in six combined goals in this World Cup, a record for any duo since 1966 in the competition. Dembele has six goal involvements in total, comprising four goals and two assists. Olise’s impact was also praised by Deschamps, who highlighted his role as a link between the strikers and the defence.

Looking Ahead to the Knockout Stage

With this victory, France has advanced to face Paraguay in the last 16. The match is scheduled to take place in Philadelphia on Saturday, 4 July. Paraguay is considered a surprise package in the tournament, and France will need to maintain their strong form to progress further.

Despite the team’s impressive run, Deschamps urged caution, stating there is always room for improvement and that the team must remain calm as they progress through the tournament.

Image:Kylian Mbappe celebrated with manager Didier Deschamps as the France boss returned to the dugout on Tuesday Credit: skysports.com

Sweden’s involvement in the tournament concluded with this defeat. Alexander Isak started for Sweden and played 89 minutes of the match in New Jersey.

France delivered a commanding performance against Sweden in the World Cup Round of 32, securing a 3-0 victory. The match, played in scorching temperatures in East Rutherford, saw Kylian Mbappé score a brace, while Bradley Barcola added another goal. Michael Olise was instrumental, providing two assists and showcasing a strong display throughout the game.

The first half presented an interesting challenge, with Sweden demonstrating a clear game plan and creating counterattack opportunities. Players like Anthony Elanga and Viktor Gyökeres aimed to link up with Alexander Isak, who had two shots on goal within the opening 25 minutes. However, the French defence, marshalled by Dayot Upamecano and William Saliba, effectively neutralised these threats, preventing Mike Maignan from being seriously tested.

Sweden’s compact and resilient defending initially frustrated France. Despite numerous deft attacking movements, France struggled to break through, leading Mbappé to attempt long-range shots. The dynamic shifted around the half-hour mark following a forceful drive from Adrian Rabiot, which Jacob Widell Zetterström managed to turn around the post. This moment seemed to ignite the French attack, leading to a succession of opportunities.

Before the opening goal, France had several near misses. Mbappé saw one shot go over and another hit the post from close range. Michael Olise executed a scissor kick that struck Zetterström’s right post, with Ousmane Dembelé’s follow-up going over the bar. Olise then had another shot from distance saved for a corner.

The breakthrough came from a short corner routine. Dembelé played the ball to Olise, who returned the pass. Dembelé then quickly fed Mbappé inside the box. Despite a tight angle and multiple defenders, Mbappé maneuvered past Gyökeres and bent a shot past Zetterström, giving France the lead just before half-time. Sweden had one more chance before the break, but Elliot Stroud’s follow-up shot went over after Jules Koundé intercepted a pass.

France extended their lead eight minutes into the second half. After Sweden conceded possession, Aurelién Tchouaméni passed to Olise. Olise delivered a precise pass between a Swedish centre-half and full-back, perfectly weighted for Bradley Barcola, who advanced into the box and powerfully struck the ball into the net.

Olise’s influence continued to grow in the second half. He roamed across the forward line, dropping deep and making runs beyond defenders, consistently seeking the ball to create danger. Around the hour mark, he forced another sprawling save from Zetterström with a shot from outside the box. His intricate passing with Rabiot and Koundé at the halfway line also demonstrated France’s control.

Mbappé secured his second goal of the match, and Olise his second assist, with 15 minutes remaining. This goal came from another deft pass from Olise, setting up Mbappé for a perfectly timed run and a curling finish into the far side of the goal. Sweden had a late opportunity for a consolation goal when Gyökeres was played through, but Mike Maignan denied the striker.

This victory sets up a Last 16 tie for France against Paraguay. Paraguay advanced after defeating Germany on penalties. The upcoming match is scheduled to take place in Philadelphia on Saturday, 4 July.

Mbappé’s Record and Golden Boot Race

Kylian Mbappé’s two goals in the match saw him become the all-time leading goalscorer in World Cup knockout matches. He now shares the lead in the Golden Boot race for this tournament with Argentina’s Lionel Messi, with both players having scored six goals.

His first goal came on the stroke of half-time, following a slide-rule pass from Dembelé. Mbappé then wrong-footed Viktor Gyökeres with a stepover before firing into the far corner. His second goal, in the 74th minute, again came from a fine pass by Olise, which Mbappé curled past Widell Zetterström.

Looking Ahead to the Next Round

France’s dominant performance has positioned them as strong contenders in the tournament. Their next challenge will be against Paraguay in the Round of 16. This match is scheduled for Saturday, 4 July, at 22:00 BST in Philadelphia.

The winner of the France vs Paraguay tie will then face either Morocco or Canada in the quarter-finals.

Kylian Mbappé celebrates after slotting home France’s third goal in a dominant display.Photograph: Al Bello/Getty Images Credit: theguardian.com

Sweden’s journey in the tournament included an opening 5-1 win over Tunisia, followed by a 5-1 loss to the Netherlands, and a draw with Japan, which secured their passage to the knockout stages. Despite their efforts against France, they were unable to overcome the strong French attack.

The match concluded with a 3-0 scoreline in favor of France.

By Hannah Whitfield — 30 June 2026 — 4 min read

France secured a 1-0 lead against Sweden in their World Cup Round of 32 match, with Kylian Mbappé scoring the opening goal late in the first half. The goal, his fifth of the tournament, positioned him alone in second place in the all-time World Cup scoring charts.

The match, played in New Jersey under warm conditions, saw France, considered tournament favourites, dominate possession and create numerous scoring opportunities. Sweden, managed by Graham Potter, faced relentless pressure throughout the first half.

First Half Dominance by France

From the outset, France controlled the tempo of the game, spending much of the half in Sweden’s territory. Early in the match, Bradley Barcola showcased an individual effort, dribbling infield from the left wing before his shot went over the bar. Mbappé also attempted a long-range shot from 25 yards, which was gathered by Swedish goalkeeper Widell Zetterstrom.

A significant moment occurred when Mbappé had a goal disallowed for a narrow offside, a decision confirmed by replays. Despite this setback, France’s attacking intent remained high. Lucas Digne also tested the Swedish keeper with a low strike from about 30 yards out, which was saved.

The French offensive continued with Adrien Rabiot’s angled shot being denied. Mbappé then hit the post after the ball broke to him in the box, narrowly missing an opportunity to open the scoring. Michael Olise, a Bayern Munich player, came close to scoring what could have been a standout goal of the tournament with an acrobatic scissor kick from 12 yards that struck the post. Ousmane Dembélé’s follow-up shot went wide.

Sweden did manage some attacking forays. Anthony Elanga burst into the French box, but his cross went out of play. A clever set piece saw a low through ball played to Alexander Isak, whose shot was charged down and saved by French goalkeeper Mike Maignan. Isak later had another chance, attempting to flick a finish past Maignan, but it went off target.

The breakthrough for France came in the 45th minute. A corner was effectively worked to allow Mbappé space on the left side of the box. He then danced inside and curled a shot into the far corner, giving France the lead just before half-time. This goal marked his 17th World Cup goal, placing him behind Lionel Messi, who has 19.

Tactical Considerations and Player Performances

France’s performance aligns with their strong showing throughout the tournament, where they have reached the previous two World Cup finals. They topped their group with ten goals spread evenly across their three matches. Their attacking unit has been prolific, scoring more goals than any other team in the tournament at the time of writing, despite ranking tenth for shots taken overall.

Aurélien Tchouaméni of Real Madrid is a player known for attempts from outside the area. His single shot in this tournament so far was from distance, sailing over the crossbar in the victory against Norway. Historically, a significant portion of his shots for his club and in previous major tournaments like Euro 2024 and the World Cup in 2022 have been from outside the box, particularly in knockout stages.

Sweden, under Graham Potter, entered the match after a varied tournament performance, including a 5-1 defeat to the Netherlands and a prior 5-1 victory. Their qualification campaign was described as shambolic, suggesting that a Round of 32 exit might not be entirely unexpected. Goals have been a consistent feature in matches under Potter’s management, with both teams scoring in all nine of his games and three or more goals returned in seven of those matches.

The warm conditions prompted a hydration break during the first half, highlighting the physical demands on the players. Didier Deschamps, the French manager, returned to the team after missing the previous game against Norway due to a family bereavement. His presence on the sidelines saw Mbappé celebrate his goal with him, in a moment described as touching.

As the second half began, Sweden immediately threatened an equaliser, with a shot flying off target after a moment of panic in the French box. France continued to press, with Olise again involved in attacking plays, including an effort that was palmed wide by the Swedish goalkeeper. The match entered three minutes of added time at the end of the first half.

Mbappé’s goal was his 17th World Cup goal, placing him alone in second in the all-time rankings.

By Hannah Whitfield — 27 June 2026 — 4 min read

Norway’s strategy questioned

Norway opted to rest key players, including star forward Erling Haaland, in their final World Cup 2026 group stage match against France. This decision led to a 4-1 defeat for Norway at Boston Stadium. Haaland, who had scored four goals in the two previous group games, started on the bench, marking the first time since 2024 he was excluded from the starting XI. Manager Stale Solbakken made 10 changes to the team, a move he described as a “no-brainer” given the team had already qualified for the knockout stages.

The decision to rest players was influenced by feedback from the physio, health, and medical departments, as well as some players themselves. Solbakken acknowledged that Norway fans would have preferred to see Haaland and Martin Odegaard play. He explained that after the game against Senegal, five or six players were significantly affected after 80 minutes, including the entire defensive line and some midfielders. This strategy aimed to ensure players were fit for the later stages of the tournament.

Despite the changes, France secured a dominant victory, with Ousmane Dembele scoring a 25-minute first-half hat-trick. Kylian Mbappe also played a role, hitting the crossbar early in the match. Desire Doue added a fourth goal for France. For Norway, Jorgen Strand Larsen missed a penalty that could have reduced France’s lead to 3-2 after half-time. The match was described as a missed opportunity for a Golden Boot showdown between Mbappe and Haaland.

Impact of the decision

The extensive changes by Norway raised questions among former players and fans. Former England striker Ian Wright expressed surprise at the number of changes, especially since Norway had used the same starting XI for their wins against Iraq and Senegal. Former Scotland winger Pat Nevin highlighted the physical style of play adopted by the Norwegians and suggested that avoiding injuries was a priority. He speculated that if Norway had fielded their usual side, which includes several tall players like Haaland, France might have faced a different challenge.

Roy Keane, a former Republic of Ireland midfielder, supported Solbakken’s reasoning, noting that Norway, playing in their first World Cup since 1998, are not yet accustomed to tournament football. He suggested that Norway’s priority was to qualify from the group, and the manager likely believed it would be difficult to defeat France, making rest a sensible option for the next week’s games. Guy Stephan, France’s assistant coach, was not surprised by Norway’s line-up changes, understanding that Solbakken was preparing for the round of 32.

Thousands of Norway fans travelled to the United States to support their team, and some at Boston Stadium were reportedly puzzled by the team news. However, others continued their Viking-style row celebration throughout the game. This instance marks a team making 10 or more changes to their starting XI in a single World Cup edition. Spain made 11 changes in 2006 and won their final group game but later lost 3-1 to France in the last 16. In contrast, Belgium made 10 changes in 2018, defeated Japan 3-2, and then beat Brazil 2-1 in the quarter-finals before being eliminated by France.

Looking ahead for Norway

France topped Group I with three wins, earning them a last-32 match at the New York New Jersey Stadium on 30 June against the runners-up of Group F or G. Meanwhile, Norway now face a significant travel challenge. Their next game requires a trip from their base in Greensboro, North Carolina, to Arlington, Texas, where they will play Ivory Coast on the same day. Had they topped the group, their travel distance would have been half of that.

The decision to rest players is a gamble, with the full impact to be seen in their upcoming knockout stage performance.

Ousmane Dembele’s hat-trick against Norway showcased France’s depth in attacking talent, with players like Michael Olise, Bradley Barcola, and Desire Doue also contributing. This performance highlighted France’s potential as tournament favourites. The expanded tournament has seen five players score four or more goals in the group stage, with Dembele and Mbappe among them, each having scored four goals. France’s next match is scheduled for 30 June.

In a fascinating intersection of education and activism, CAFRE horticulture students recently completed a study tour in France, gaining insights into innovative practices. This tour comes just as significant protests are planned across the country on May 1, a day that symbolizes workers’ rights.

The students visited notable locations like Nantes and Angers in the Loire Valley region. They explored Pépinières Lepage, a large-scale ornamental and bulb producer, which produces around 3 million perennials and grasses annually. The tour also included L’Institut Agro Rennes-Angers, a hub for horticultural production and landscape design.

One of the highlights was meeting Vincent Favreau, an organic market gardener in Saumur who has been supplying seasonal vegetable boxes for over 20 years. He discussed the challenges of organic farming, particularly regarding soil conditions and variable rainfall. “The area presents challenging soil conditions and variable rainfall,” he noted, emphasizing the complexities of sustainable agriculture.

As these students absorbed knowledge about sustainability and innovative horticultural practices, the backdrop of looming protests added a layer of urgency to their experience. On May 1, a public holiday in France since 1947, between 110,000 and 160,000 people are expected to participate in marches across the country. The CGT union has called for protests against the high cost of living, rallying workers to demand fair compensation.

Key details about the upcoming demonstrations:

320 demonstrations are set to take place in major towns and cities across France.

The CGT’s call to action emphasizes the need for better remuneration for workers.

This day is not just about labor rights; it’s also about raising awareness on issues like sustainability in various sectors.

The Tour de France adds another layer of significance to this period. It will host Stage 1 in the Scottish Borders on July 2, 2027—a spectacle viewed by an estimated global audience of 3.5-4 billion. The race symbolizes endurance and perseverance—qualities that resonate deeply during this time of protest.

This juxtaposition of horticultural education and social activism raises questions about the future direction of both sectors. How can agricultural practices evolve alongside societal demands for workers’ rights? As students return home with newfound knowledge, they carry not just insights into sustainable farming but also an awareness of the broader social landscape they inhabit.
