Tottenham Hotspur have reached an agreement to sign Portuguese midfielder Mateus Fernandes from West Ham United in a deal valued at £85m. This move sees the North London club secure a key target, fending off competition from Manchester United, who were also pursuing the player.
The £85m fee for Fernandes is understood to be a guaranteed amount, without additional clauses. This acquisition follows Tottenham’s earlier attempt to sign Sandro Tonali, with an £80m bid reportedly rejected by Newcastle. Fernandes, who is 21 years old, has been granted permission to undergo a medical examination at Spurs.
Tottenham has been active in the transfer market this summer, having already brought in four players. Among these are goalkeeper Martin Dubravka, who will join on a free transfer from Burnley after his contract expires on 1 July. Other defensive reinforcements include Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson, both arriving on free transfers from Bournemouth and Liverpool respectively, and Jan Paul van Hecke, a Netherlands defender signed from Brighton for £52m.
The pursuit of Fernandes intensified after a move for Tonali proved challenging. Tonali recently extended his contract with Newcastle, reportedly to show commitment following a 10-month ban for breaching the Football Association’s betting rules.
Despite experiencing consecutive Premier League relegations, Fernandes was a highly sought-after player this summer, with both Manchester United and Paris St-Germain expressing interest. His agent, Jorge Mendes, engaged in discussions with both Tottenham and Manchester United regarding his client’s future.
United’s Stance on Transfers
Manchester United ultimately withdrew from the deal for Fernandes, adhering to their policy of acquiring players only at what they consider to be the correct valuation. While they had an interest in Fernandes, they believed their patience in the transfer market had previously resulted in securing players at appropriate prices.
Concerns within Manchester United also reportedly arose regarding Fernandes’s unequivocal desire to play for the club. Their primary focus remains strengthening the central midfield area. They have already agreed a £35m deal with Atalanta for Ederson, though his arrival has been delayed due to a late call-up to the Brazil World Cup squad.
United’s squad is scheduled to return for pre-season training on 9 July. Apart from the departures of out-of-contract players Casemiro and Tyrell Malacia, manager Michael Carrick’s squad largely remains unchanged from the end of last season, with no significant new arrivals or exits reported.
A planned sale of Manuel Ugarte has been put on hold following a serious injury he sustained while on World Cup duty with Uruguay. Meanwhile, Netherlands striker Joshua Zirkzee remains at the club, and reports concerning midfielder Mason Mount’s potential exit have been dismissed by sources.
Fernandes’s Potential and Role
Decision-makers at West Ham view Fernandes as one of the most promising young talents in the Premier League from last season. They believe he possesses the potential to reach the calibre of Declan Rice, who moved to Arsenal for £105m in 2023.
Spurs’ determination to secure Fernandes is seen as a response to missing out on several key targets in the previous summer transfer window, including Bryan Mbeumo, who joined Manchester United. This has reportedly fueled the club’s desire to make a significant statement signing this window.
According to Jamie Redknapp, this signing signals a new approach for Tottenham in the transfer market, suggesting a more aggressive strategy compared to previous regimes. The club’s recent activity, including the pursuit of players like Tonali and Fernandes, indicates a focus on bolstering their midfield quality.
Michael Bridge described the deal as a “humongous” and a “mega statement of intent” from Tottenham, noting that their previous record transfer was Dominic Solanke for approximately £65m. He added that West Ham had been firm on their £85m valuation for Fernandes, believing him to be a future top midfielder.
Simon Rusk, who previously worked with Fernandes at Southampton, highlighted the player’s strong tackling abilities and high-intensity running as key attributes. While initially seen as a more advanced player, Fernandes himself viewed his role as more of an all-round midfielder, or a number eight.
West Ham utilized Fernandes primarily in a hybrid role between a number six and a number eight during the recently concluded season, recognizing his desire to play slightly deeper. His performances at West Ham showcased an improvement in his game intelligence, combined with his natural strength, tenacity, and endurance.
The agreement for Fernandes marks a significant step for Tottenham in their summer transfer activities, with the medical examination now pending.
