Chelsea has completed the acquisition of Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for a fee of £117m. The attacking midfielder has agreed to a six-year contract, with an option for an additional year, and underwent a medical in London on Monday. This transfer marks a significant move for Chelsea, making Rogers their record signing.
Rogers returned from the United States, where he featured for England at the World Cup, to finalise the deal. Chelsea had been monitoring Rogers for over two years and identified him as a primary attacking target. The club moved swiftly after England’s semi-final defeat to Argentina, with a combined effort from sporting directors, head coach Xabi Alonso, and co-owner Behdad Eghbali helping to secure the agreement. Even Chelsea captain Reece James advocated for the club from within the England camp, and Cole Palmer was aware of the developments, as Rogers considers him “one of my best friends in life.”
The transfer was finalised on Saturday afternoon, shortly before Rogers was due to play in England’s bronze-medal match against France. The strong relationship between Chelsea co-owner Eghbali and Aston Villa owner Nassef Sawiris was a key factor in the agreement. Arsenal, who had also shown interest in Rogers, were given the opportunity to match Chelsea’s bid but declined, stating their commitment to a lower valuation.
Rogers’ role at Chelsea
Rogers’ arrival is expected to bolster Chelsea’s squad, particularly given his versatility. He contributed 14 goals and 12 assists in 55 appearances last season for Aston Villa. His instrumental role helped Villa reach the Champions League and win the Europa League last season. He also started on the right wing in England’s semi-final match against Argentina, where he created the opening goal for Anthony Gordon.
The transition to Chelsea may be eased by existing connections. Rogers knows Levi Colwill and Reece James through the England set-up. Additionally, Tosin Adarabioyo, Jamie Gittens, Romeo Lavia, and Liam Delap all came through Manchester City‘s academy system, where Rogers also developed. Rogers and Palmer became friends at the age of 16 while at Manchester City, where they both starred for the club’s FA Youth Cup-winning under-18 side in 2020.
The question of where Rogers will fit into the team, especially alongside Palmer, is a tactical consideration. Rogers was selected by England manager ahead of Palmer for this summer’s World Cup. Their versatility suggests they can play together or in each other’s positions. One report indicates Rogers will primarily play on the left, with Palmer operating centrally as a number 10. This setup would see Estevao Willian, Pedro Neto, and new signing Geovany Quenda competing for spots on the right, with Jamie Gittens as an understudy.
Chelsea’s head coach Xabi Alonso is exploring various tactical options for the upcoming season, including both a back four and a back-three system. A back-three system could allow Palmer and Rogers to play together as dual number 10s, with wingers taking on deeper wing-back roles.
Financial considerations and squad adjustments
The substantial fee for Rogers, alongside the £47m spent on full-back Marco Palestra from Atalanta and potential arrivals like defenders Pep Chavarria from Rayo Vallecano and Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace, highlights Chelsea’s continued investment. Midfielder Valentin Barco is also expected to join from Strasbourg, though this deal has not yet been confirmed by Chelsea.
To balance their finances and comply with financial regulations, Chelsea needs to generate income through player sales. Last season, the club achieved a league-record £300m in player sales to meet Premier League financial rules. Uefa has also fined Chelsea for breaching its regulations, with a £26.7m fine last summer and a £2.6m fine this summer, much of which can be waived if the club improves its financial standing.
Chelsea has already sold Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid, Andrey Santos to Manchester United, Tyrique George to Everton, and Jimmy-Jay Morgan to West Bromwich Albion, generating over £120m. With five new signings anticipated this summer, Chelsea aims to sell or loan out at least a dozen players from their 37 senior options to maintain healthy accounts. Aston Villa, in turn, will look to reinvest the funds from Rogers’ sale into their squad, having already completed the £38m signing of midfielder Joao Gomes from Wolves and expecting to conclude a deal for Lucas Digne to join Paris Saint-Germain.
