Villa secures winger on loan
Aston Villa has confirmed the loan signing of winger Alejandro Garnacho from Chelsea. The agreement is a season-long loan that includes a conditional obligation for Villa to purchase the player permanently. This move continues a period of change at Villa Park.
Garnacho originally joined Chelsea from Manchester United last August for a fee of £40m. Reports indicate that Villa is expected to pay a similar fee for the player if the conditional obligation to buy is met. The deal is understood to include a total package, including the loan fee, that meets Chelsea’s valuation, which was reportedly £42.6m for the winger.
Unai Emery, Villa’s boss, expressed his satisfaction with the acquisition, stating, “We are delighted with Alejandro. He is so talented, young and he showed us his wish to help our project. We are really happy.” Garnacho will wear the No 17 shirt at Villa.
Financial considerations and previous transfers
Garnacho’s departure from Stamford Bridge was facilitated after he was informed he would not be guaranteed regular playing time under Chelsea’s new manager, Xabi Alonso. He did not report for pre-season duty with Chelsea, as had been pre-arranged, and stayed away from the training ground while his departure was being finalised.
This transfer marks Villa’s third signing of the summer, following the arrivals of Johan Manzambi and João Gomes. The move also continues a series of transfers between the two clubs. Earlier this week, Morgan Rogers moved to Chelsea in a deal worth £117m. Other transfers between the clubs include Carney Chukwuemeka’s and Omari Kellyman’s sales to Chelsea in 2022 and 2024, respectively, and Ian Maatsen heading to Villa in 2024.
The financial aspects of the deal are influenced by both clubs having recently received fines from UEFA for breaching financial sustainability regulations. Villa received a partially suspended £19.4m fine from UEFA for a “significant breach” of squad-cost rules for 2025. A portion of this fine, £12.9m, is suspended, contingent on the club significantly decreasing its squad-cost ratio in 2026. This also restricts the registration of new players on their squad list for the upcoming Champions League season.
Implications for both clubs
The structure of Garnacho’s deal, an initial loan with an easily achievable conditional obligation to buy, is designed to navigate financial regulations. UEFA rules regarding ‘player exchange transactions’ could impact how profits are calculated if two transfers between clubs are concluded within 45 days and have similar payment obligations. This type of loan agreement aims to ensure that a permanent sale is guaranteed for Chelsea while adhering to financial guidelines.
Manchester United could be due approximately £260k if Garnacho’s move to Villa becomes permanent, due to a 10 per cent sell-on clause included in their original deal with Chelsea. Garnacho was also named in Argentina’s initial 55-man selection but did not participate in this summer’s World Cup.
In other transfer news, Youri Tielemans has departed Villa for Manchester United this month after his £35m release clause was triggered. Additionally, Jadon Sancho, who spent last season on loan at Villa from United, became a free agent but was not signed permanently by Villa.
