First Practice Session Highlights
Charles Leclerc of Ferrari recorded the fastest time during the first practice session for the Hungarian Grand Prix. His best lap was a 1m 19.075s, placing him approximately half a second ahead of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen. However, Leclerc’s session concluded prematurely when his car experienced a mechanical issue, causing it to stop in the pit lane entry with about seven minutes remaining.
Verstappen secured the second-fastest time, followed by Lewis Hamilton. Isack Hadjar, also from Red Bull, finished fourth, ensuring both Red Bull cars were within the top four. George Russell of Mercedes was fifth, with Gabriel Bortoleto of Audi in sixth. Frederik Vesti, driving for Mercedes in place of championship leader Kimi Antonelli, posted the seventh-fastest time. The top ten was rounded out by Nico Hulkenberg (Audi), Arvid Lindblad, and Liam Lawson (both Racing Bulls).
Aston Martin’s New Package and Stroll’s Incident
The practice session saw the debut of Aston Martin’s significantly revised car. However, the session was interrupted by a red flag with just over 20 minutes left when Lance Stroll’s Aston Martin suffered a left-rear suspension failure at Turn Three, leading to a spin. Stroll was able to exit his car following the incident.
Adrian Newey, Aston Martin’s team boss, commented on the incident, stating that the area involved in the failure was not part of the recent changes to the car, making the issue unexpected. He also mentioned that the team was working to understand the cause of the problem. Despite Stroll’s setback, his teammate Fernando Alonso, who set the 13th fastest time, showed promising pace with the new package, finishing 2.475 seconds behind Leclerc. This represents a notable improvement from the four-second gap that had typically separated Aston Martin from the frontrunners earlier in the season.
The new Aston Martin car features extensive modifications, with only the front suspension, engine, and gearbox remaining unchanged from the previous race in Belgium. The chassis itself has been altered to reduce weight, necessitating a full re-homologation process and mandatory crash tests by the FIA. Newey indicated that the provisional results of the new package are promising and that further upgrades are planned for Monza and Baku, with a second phase of chassis upgrades expected after the summer break at Zandvoort.
Honda, Aston Martin’s engine partner, is also scheduled to introduce an upgraded power unit at the upcoming Dutch Grand Prix, following Formula 1’s four-week summer break.

The session saw several rookie drivers participating, including Fred Vesti for Mercedes, Colton Herta for Cadillac, Leonardo Fornaroli for McLaren, Ryo Hirakawa for Haas, Sergio Perez for Cadillac, and Paul Aron for Alpine. Many teams brought upgrades to Budapest for the 40th Hungarian Grand Prix.
During the session, Max Verstappen reported issues with downshifts, while Lewis Hamilton noted his car’s ride was too stiff. Carlos Sainz’s Williams and Alex Albon’s Williams both experienced lock-ups. Leclerc was briefly impeded by Hamilton at Turn 12, and Verstappen was also noted for driving erratically after encountering Sainz’s Williams on the racing line, an incident that will be investigated after the session.
