Chelsea have reached an agreement with Crystal Palace for the transfer of defender Maxence Lacroix. The deal is understood to involve a fee in the region of £51m, with personal terms not expected to be an issue for the player. Lacroix is anticipated to undergo a medical examination within the next 24 hours before signing a long-term contract, which is reportedly set to run until 2032.
The agreement between the two London clubs was negotiated at the ownership level. Lacroix, a France international, joined Palace from Bundesliga side Wolfsburg in August 2024 for an initial fee of £15.5m, with potential add-ons of £2.6m. He has since established himself as a consistent central defender in the Premier League.
Lacroix’s impact at Palace
During his time at Crystal Palace, Lacroix was a regular under manager Oliver Glasner. He made 55 appearances across all competitions in a recent season, contributing to Palace’s victory in the Uefa Conference League, which marked the club’s first major European trophy. He also participated in Palace’s Community Shield win against Liverpool.
Lacroix’s performances earned him a place in France’s squad for the 2026 World Cup. He featured in three appearances during the tournament, including starts against Norway and England in the third-place play-off, as Les Bleus finished fourth.
Why Chelsea targeted the defender
Chelsea’s interest in Lacroix follows his two seasons in English football. In the 2025-26 Premier League campaign, he was the only player to record at least 50 tackles, 200 duels won, and 250 clearances. Standing at 6ft 4in, Lacroix combines aerial strength with recovery pace. Since his arrival from Wolfsburg in 2024, he has been among the five fastest centre-backs in the Premier League, achieving a top speed of 35.81km/h (22.3mph).
His athleticism is also evident in his defensive statistics. Over the past two Premier League seasons, Lacroix recorded the best success rate in one-on-one defensive situations among players who faced at least 50 such duels, winning possession 50.5% of the time.
Lacroix’s tactical versatility is another factor. He is comfortable operating in both a back four and a back three. He spent two seasons in Oliver Glasner’s three-man defence at Crystal Palace, but has also demonstrated his ability in a more conventional back four. This adaptability could provide additional options for Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso, who has utilised both systems during his coaching career.
During discussions for Lacroix, Chelsea reportedly offered Palace the opportunity to consider signing one of their available defenders, with Axel Disasi, Trevoh Chalobah, and Benoit Badiashile among those who have drawn interest from other clubs. Palace and Chelsea have a history of player deals, including those involving Chalobah and Ben Chilwell.
Palace had been focusing on Augsburg centre-back Chrislain Matsima, but are now reportedly prepared to withdraw from that deal due to frustrations with the pace of negotiations. Since Marc Guehi’s move to Manchester City in the January window, Palace has shown interest in several centre-backs, including Toulouse’s Charlie Cresswell, Lyon’s Ruben Kluivert, and Trabzonspor’s Chibuke Nwaiwu.
Chelsea’s recent summer acquisitions include Geovany Quenda from Sporting for £43.5m, Marco Palestra from Atalanta for £43m, Denner from Corinthians for £8.7m, Dastan Satpaev from Kairat Almaty for £2.1m, Emmanuel Emegha from Strasbourg for an undisclosed fee, and Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for £117m. Player departures include Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid for £51.8m, Andrey Santos to Man Utd for £50m, Tyrique George to Everton for £24m, and Jimmy-Jay Morgan to West Brom for £4m.
Lacroix is expected to finalise his move to Chelsea on Friday, July 24, 2026.
