Morgan Rogers has officially completed his transfer to Chelsea from Aston Villa for a fee of £117m, signing a seven-year deal. This move makes him the Blues’ record signing. A deal was reached on Saturday for the 23-year-old to move to Stamford Bridge, with Chelsea securing his signature ahead of Arsenal, who had also been in discussions.

The opportunity to work under new Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso was a significant factor in Rogers’ decision. Rogers expressed excitement about Alonso’s playing philosophy, stating it aligns with his own vision for the game. He also highlighted his long-standing admiration for Chelsea, describing them as the biggest club in London.

A New Chapter at Stamford Bridge

Rogers recently returned from the World Cup, where he helped England secure a third-place finish. He started in the 2-1 semi-final defeat to Argentina in Atlanta and the 6-4 victory over France that earned the bronze medal. He conveyed his enthusiasm for the project with the new manager and the team’s direction.

The versatile forward, who can play multiple attacking roles, experienced a rapid ascent at Villa Park following his transfer from Middlesbrough in January 2024. During his time at Aston Villa, he contributed to the team’s top-four finish and qualification for the Europa League last season. He scored 31 times in 125 appearances under Unai Emery before his move to Chelsea.

This transfer is considered one of the most significant acquisitions during Chelsea owners BlueCo’s four-year reign. Co-owner Behdad Eghbali had previously indicated the club’s intention to target players who could help challenge for the title, following an underwhelming campaign where the team finished 10th and was eliminated in the Champions League last 16 by Paris Saint-Germain.

Alonso, a former Liverpool, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich midfielder with two Champions League titles as a player, was brought in partly to attract high-calibre players to Chelsea. The acquisition of Rogers is seen as one of the club’s most notable deals since Cole Palmer joined from Manchester City in 2023.

Personal Growth and Family Support

Rogers is the fourth signing for Chelsea this summer, joining defender Marco Palestra, striker Emmanuel Emegha, and winger Geovany Quenda as part of the squad overhaul. In June, the club’s attempt to reunite Alonso with Sunderland’s Granit Xhaka was unsuccessful, as Chelsea did not meet Sunderland’s valuation for the player.

Reflecting on his journey, Rogers emphasised the importance of maintaining joy and spirit in his game, an attitude cultivated since childhood. He credits his family for providing him with a platform to play football and express himself, noting their unwavering support throughout his career. His family members were present at Cobham during his move, underscoring their significance to him.

Rogers also spoke about overcoming challenges, including difficult loan spells at Lincoln, Bournemouth, and Blackpool. These experiences, he explained, taught him to adapt and use setbacks positively, contributing to his mental development and current position in football. He highlighted the importance of improving his mentality and gaining experiences quickly.

His elder brother, Daniel, a therapist who has previously worked with Chelsea, has been a significant source of guidance. Daniel’s insights have helped Rogers navigate the increased scrutiny that came with establishing himself as a Premier League player and representing England, including at this summer’s World Cup. Rogers, who will turn 24 on Sunday, looks forward to making a difference on the pitch for Chelsea.
