Joe Root has been named England Men’s Test captain once again, working alongside newly appointed Head Coach Stephen Fleming. This marks a return to the captaincy for Root, who previously led the team from 2017 to 2022.
Michael Vaughan, a former skipper, suggested that the return to the captaincy could be beneficial for Root, providing renewed motivation for his Test cricket career. Vaughan noted that many of Root’s close friends from the team have either retired or moved on, suggesting this new challenge might be “exactly what Joe Root needs.”
Fleming’s Coaching Background and Appointment
Stephen Fleming joins the England Men’s Test team as Head Coach after an extensive coaching career. He recently departed from Chennai Super Kings, where he coached the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise, leading them to five IPL titles and reaching the final 10 times. Fleming also guided Southern Brave to the final of The Hundred men’s competition in 2023 and has coached affiliate teams in South Africa and the USA, as well as the Melbourne Stars.
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) stated that Fleming’s appointment followed a rigorous selection process, with the selection panel unanimously agreeing on him.
Fleming’s role is set to commence after the start of the upcoming Rothesay Test Series against Pakistan. During this series, Marcus Trescothick will serve as interim Head Coach. Fleming plans to travel to the UK later this summer to prepare for the South Africa Test tour.

Root stepped down from the captaincy in 2022 after a 10-wicket defeat to West Indies, following a period of nine matches without a win. He cited the “toll” and “impact” the role had on him. However, Michael Vaughan suggested that Root had faced a “dodgy hand” during his previous captaincy, noting the focus on the 50-over World Cup and the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Root stated that it is a “great honour and privilege” to be asked to lead the team again. He expressed enthusiasm for working with Stephen Fleming, acknowledging Fleming’s leadership and knowledge of the game. Root is keen to lead the “next generation of players forward” and contribute to building a winning environment.
Rob Key highlighted that Root will have the opportunity to lead “free from the Covid restrictions” that impacted his first stint as captain. Richard Gould, ECB Chief Executive Officer, believes Fleming’s leadership style, combined with Root’s, can advance the Men’s Test team.
Vaughan also suggested that Fleming’s appointment could alleviate some of the pressures on the captain, such as “organising the dressing room and making sure the tactical side of the team is in good order.”
Fleming’s connection with former coach Brendon McCullum, who remains the white-ball coach, was also noted as a factor in his selection. Vaughan indicated that Fleming’s close relationship with McCullum could facilitate a smoother working dynamic between the Test and white-ball coaching setups.
Fleming aims to build on the progress made by Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes, with a focus on both immediate wins and the team’s long-term future. He also looks forward to supporting players like Harry Brook in their development.
