Hearts suffered a heavy aggregate defeat to see them eliminated from the Champions LeagueHearts suffered a heavy aggregate defeat to see them eliminated from the Champions League

Hearts have been eliminated from the Champions League after a 2-0 home defeat to Sturm Graz, resulting in a 6-0 aggregate loss. The Edinburgh side, who were trailing 4-0 from the first leg in Austria, were unable to mount a comeback at Tynecastle.

Manager Wouter Vrancken had expressed hope for a “magical, historic night” at Tynecastle, acknowledging his team would need to be “almost perfect.” Despite a bright start that offered some hope to the home supporters, Sturm Graz took control of the match. Two goals midway through the second half sealed the victory for the Austrian club, marking Hearts‘ first home defeat in 15 months.

Early Hopes and Missed Opportunities

Wouter Vrancken made three changes to the squad that started the first leg, bringing in Jordi Altena and captain Stephen Kingsley to the defence, while Sabri Guendouz made his first start in support of striker Claudio Braga. The Belgian manager would have been encouraged by his side’s positive start, as they pressed the Austrians early on.

An early opportunity arose in the ninth minute when Malachi Fagan-Walcott glanced a header just wide from Alexandros Kyziridis‘ free-kick. Shortly after, Blair Spittal had a shot blocked after a delivery from Calvin Miller. Hearts also had a significant moment in the 16th minute when goalkeeper Alexander Schwolow, playing his final game before joining Mainz, denied Szymon Wlodarczyk after a defensive error by Fagan-Walcott.

However, as Hearts‘ initial pressure waned, Sturm Graz began to create more chances. Seedy Jatta had an attempt that went into the side netting in the 24th minute, and Schwolow made another save to thwart Jatta before Jacob Hodl‘s rebound was cleared off the line by Kingsley. Sturm Graz thought they had scored in the 26th minute when Jatta found the net, but the goal was disallowed after a VAR check for a foul on Harry Milne.

Second Half Decisive Goals

Hearts threatened again in the 42nd minute when a cut-back from Miller was cleared by the visitors. However, any remaining hopes for the home side were extinguished in the second half. In the 64th minute, Simon Seidl scored with an angled finish that went in off the far post, following a flick-on from captain Jon Gorenc.

Just four minutes later, Emran Soglo extended Sturm Graz‘s lead. After his initial effort was blocked by Schwolow, Soglo bundled in the rebound. Hearts also faced injury setbacks during the match, with both Stephen Kingsley and Alexandros Kyziridis leaving the field.

Looking Ahead to the Europa League and Domestic Season

Following their elimination from the Champions League, Hearts will now enter the Europa League. They are set to face the winner of the tie between Benfica and St Gallen in the third qualifying round, with the Swiss side currently holding a 2-1 lead from their first leg.

The club’s early exit from European competition has led to some concern among fans and former players. Former Hearts forward Ryan Stevenson described the situation as “worrying” and a “rude awakening,” noting a perceived lack of connection between players and fans. He highlighted the departures of key players like Lawrence Shankland, Cammy Devlin, and Derek McInnes, alongside 11 new additions to the squad, which he suggested has led to a disjointed team.

Vrancken acknowledged that his players were not fully ready physically for the Champions League qualifiers, stating that the games came “too soon.” He noted that while the team performed well with the ball in periods, physical conditioning made it difficult to sustain. Despite the early season challenges, Vrancken remains optimistic, stating, “We have to take the results and go into games like we did today, but hopefully finish it.”

Hearts will begin their Scottish Premiership campaign with an away match against Aberdeen on Saturday.
