Wales Prepares for Summer Fixtures

Wales is set to begin its summer schedule with a match against the Barbarians at Allianz Stadium, Twickenham. This fixture serves as a warm-up before Wales embarks on its Nations Championship campaign, which includes matches against Fiji, Argentina, and South Africa. The game is scheduled to kick off at 14:00.

The squad for this initial summer encounter features eight players from Scarlets. These players will form the entire three-quarter line for Wales. Among them are Blair Murray at full-back, Tom Rogers and Ellis Mee on the wings, and Joe Hawkins and Eddie James in the midfield. Additionally, flanker Taine Plumtree is included in the starting XV.

On the bench, Scarlets hooker Ryan Elias and Sam Costelow, who has recovered from injury, are listed. These selections are part of the Steve Tandy-coached side’s matchday 23.

Squad Selections and Debut Opportunities

The Wales squad includes four uncapped players who are in line to make their senior international debuts. These new additions are Cardiff loose-head prop Rhys Barratt, Ospreys tight-head Ben Warren, Dragons second row Ryan Woodman, and Dragons back-rower Harrison Keddie. These players are all named among the replacements.

Steve Tandy expressed his satisfaction with the team’s training block leading up to this game and highlighted the excitement surrounding the start of their summer fixtures. He also conveyed his delight for the uncapped players, noting their opportunity to make their first senior appearances for Wales.

The coaching staff views the Barbarians as a significant challenge, anticipating a high-paced game with numerous offloads due to the skill of their players. This type of match is considered excellent preparation for the upcoming Nations Championship, particularly ahead of facing Fiji the following week.

Women’s Team Also in Action

The event at Allianz Stadium will feature a double-header, with Sean Lynn’s Wales Women’s team also competing against the Barbarians. Their match is scheduled for 17:00.

The Wales Women’s team will be captained by Llanelli’s Alex Callender, who is returning from injury. The squad includes former Scarlets players such as centre Jenna de Vera, prop Maisie Davies, and flanker Alisha Joyce. A significant portion of the women’s starting line-up, with eleven players, are aged 22 or under.

Many of the players in the Wales Women’s squad have experience from Celtic Challenge rugby, having played for either Brython Thunder or Gwalia Lightning, both based at Parc y Scarlets. The match against the Barbarians will provide both the men’s and women’s teams with valuable game time as they look to build on recent performances.

The men’s team will be looking to continue building on their performances from the Six Nations, where they secured a victory against Italy. The match against the Barbarians is seen as an opportunity to maintain momentum and further improve as a group before the Nations Championship begins.

The Wales Men starting lineup includes Blair Murray at full-back, Tom Rogers and Eddie James in the centres, Joe Hawkins at inside centre, Dan Edwards at fly-half, and Kieran Hardy at scrum-half. The forward pack features Gareth Thomas, Dewi Lake (captain), Dillon Lewis, Ben Carter, Teddy Williams, Taine Plumtree, Jac Morgan, and Aaron Wainwright.

The replacements for the men’s team include Ryan Elias, Rhys Barratt, Ben Warren, Ryan Woodman, Harrison Keddie, Reuben Morgan-Williams, Sam Costelow, and Mason Grady. The women’s team’s starting lineup features Nel Metcalfe at full-back, Kelsie Webster and Amy Williams on the wings, Courtney Keight and Jenna De Vera in the centres, Kayleigh Powell at fly-half, and Seren Lockwood at scrum-half. The forward pack includes Maisie Davies, Molly Reardon, Sisilia Tuipulotu, Branwen Metcalfe, Jorja Aiono, Alisha Joyce, Alex Callender (captain), and Bryonie King.

The women’s team replacements are Kelsey Jones, Katherine Baverstock, Stella Orrin, Alaw Pyrs, Lucy Isaac, Lily Hawkins, Keira Bevan, and Freya Bell. Both matches will take place on Saturday.
