Thousands of civil servants are facing financial uncertainty as Capita struggles to process pension payments, leading to widespread hardship and criticism from MPs. Since taking over the administration of the Civil Service Pension Scheme in December 2025, Capita has failed to deliver both lump sums and regular payments.

The situation escalated quickly. By early 2026, approximately 86,000 people across the country found themselves affected by a backlog of pension payments. The volume of calls to Capita’s service peaked at an astonishing 25,000 per week. Meanwhile, around 3,000 civil servants retire every month—many have not received their first pension payment since December 1, 2025.

As the crisis deepened, the government announced interest-free “hardship loans” for the worst-affected individuals. Yet, these loans are merely a band-aid solution for those struggling to pay basic bills and get by day-to-day. Lisa Blundell aptly stated, “People are not getting their pension. People are struggling to pay basic bills and get by day-to-day. How is any of that not urgent?” This highlights the dire circumstances many find themselves in.

Criticism towards Capita has been fierce. Anneliese Midgley remarked that “Capita’s management of the Civil Service pension scheme has been an absolute shambles.” The Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS) is advocating for accountability regarding these delays, emphasizing that this situation erodes members’ confidence in the administration of their pensions.

Adding fuel to the fire, Capita also faced backlash for a data breach that exposed personal details of 138 civil service pension scheme members. This incident only exacerbates the already fragile trust between public sector workers and their pension administrators.

The current state of affairs is troubling. Officials have not confirmed when they expect to resolve this backlog, leaving many in limbo. It’s uncertain if Capita will meet its target to clear the pensions backlog by the end of June.

This sequence of events matters greatly for those involved—retired or soon-to-be-retired civil servants depend on these funds for their livelihood. The ongoing administrative delays and failures in processing payments jeopardize their financial stability and peace of mind.
