A gang that preyed on elderly victims in burglaries has been jailed, while another gang was ordered to repay millions for illegally streaming Premier League matches.

Before this shift, it seemed like organised crime was thriving in the shadows. The expectation was that these groups would continue their illicit activities with little consequence. But then came a decisive moment: five members of a gang were sentenced to more than 30 years in prison for their roles in an illegal streaming operation that generated over £7 million between 2016 and 2021.

In contrast, another gang targeted vulnerable elderly individuals across north-east Wales. They used deceitful tactics—like claiming to search for a missing cat—to gain access to homes. This led to trauma for at least five victims who lost cash and sentimental jewellery.

The sentences handed down were significant:

Adam Purcell received three and a half years.

Michael McGuire got two years and 11 months.

Michael Berry was sentenced to three years.

Anne Delaney received a suspended sentence of 23 months.

Superintendent Mark Williams condemned the actions of the burglary gang, stating, “This organised crime gang targeted a number of innocent families – some who were extremely vulnerable – stealing cash and sentimental family jewellery for their own financial gain.” His words underscore the emotional toll such crimes inflict on communities.

Meanwhile, the illegal streaming gang’s financial penalties were staggering. They were ordered to repay £3.75 million—the second largest figure in the UK against illegal streaming operators. This amount will be split between the Treasury and bodies involved in prosecution.

This juxtaposition raises questions about how society deals with different forms of organised crime. Are we prioritising certain crimes over others? With both gangs facing justice, what does this mean for future enforcement against such activities?
