monarch of the glen — GB news

“When I was offered the chance to re-imagine Monarch of the Glen, I leapt at it,” said Jeremy Brock, who is helming this new iteration. The beloved Scottish comedy-drama is set to return with a fresh storyline and a new lead character, Isla Campbell, an ambitious London lawyer.

Isla returns to her family’s Highland estate for her estranged father’s funeral, only to uncover that she has inherited not just grief but also a million-pound debt. To make matters more complicated, she finds herself at odds with her brother, who refuses to let go of their ancestral home.

This reboot promises to capture the essence of its predecessor while introducing a rich ensemble of new characters. The original Monarch of the Glen aired from 2000 to 2005 on BBC One and consisted of 64 episodes across seven series. It was loosely based on the Highland Novels series by Sir Compton Mackenzie.

Filming for this six-part reboot will take place in the stunning landscapes of Scotland and Northern Ireland later this year. Ecosse Films, which produced the original series, is back on board for this reimagining.

“Hope and joy are a currency in short supply right now,” Brock added. “The Highlands—one of the most magical places on Earth—felt like exactly the right home for them.” His vision seems to resonate with those eager for a blend of warmth, humor, and romance that defined the original series.

Robert Bernstein expressed his enthusiasm as well: “Monarch of the Glen holds a very special place in our hearts, and we are absolutely thrilled to be bringing this beloved show to the next generation of viewers.”

However, casting details remain under wraps, leaving fans curious about who will step into these iconic roles. The reboot aims to appeal not just to long-time fans but also to a new audience looking for relatable family sagas set against breathtaking backdrops.

The show will air on Channel 5 and is expected to find its way into homes via Masterpiece PBS in America as well. With such high expectations riding on it, one can’t help but wonder—can this new version capture the magic that made its predecessor so beloved?
